Since the mid 1980’s there hasn’t been an affordable housing project built in the city of Live Oak. On February 11, 2013, a notice of completion was signed making 56 family units available to the local community. Interest is high and residents will start moving in next week. Not only will these residences fit household budgets, they will save energy and water. For most residents, their energy bill will be half of what they are used to paying as the buildings perform 25 percent better than the current T24 energy code requirements.
Building on local traditions, residents will be given the opportunity to garden at two locations on the site. Previously, residents had garden plots next to each entry, many of which went fallow. Now, raised beds with picnic benches and play areas are centrally located and contribute to a sense of community. Garden courts are located at unit entries for individual expression. Outdoor amenities include raised garden beds, grassy play areas, half court basketball, and picnic and play structures.
An undeveloped space on the project site is reserved for Phase II and will house seniors. When complete, it will aid in making this a multi-generational community. Several former residents are seniors and have expressed interest in returning to the site when the senior component is built. The newly completed community center is designed to accommodate families and seniors and allows for combined community events.
At the completion of Phase II, the project will have a total of 76 units at a density of 23 units per acre.
