Great news on the efforts to reduce homelessness in Sacramento! Safe Ground Sacramento, a non-profit organization that Mogavero Notestine Associates has been involved with for several years, has been working to build a housing community for the local homeless population and was able to secure a permit to construct and display a prototype cabin in Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento. The demonstration cabin would be typical for an eventual planned community in Sacramento. The cabin will be on display from Wednesday, September 19th through Saturday, September 22nd and will incorporate presentations and an interactive forum for anyone who is interested in hearing about the goals of Safe Ground and how the cabins would be built. A special thanks to Habitat for Humanity for helping on the construction of the cabin and to Ikea for providing furnishings!
While there has been some progress on the effort to end homelessness across America (a 2012 report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness found that during the economic downturn from 2009-2011, the instances of homelessness actually decreased by 1 percent, likely due to increased amounts of federal investment), there are still over 600,000 people currently documented as homeless and millions more on in danger of becoming homeless. This figure will continue to grow as federal resources run out and negative economic and demographic factors push more people toward homelessness. Providing housing for those in need and investing in our communities to build a better tomorrow makes sense. That’s why our firm got involved.
Safe Ground Sacramento, along with Mogavero Notestine Associates, is committed to both of these goals. This new homeless community in Sacramento would be something that seeks to dispel the idea that a cluster of hastily constructed tents and unsafe living conditions constitutes a place for people to live. The community will be a safe, clean and attractive development with community features and a sustainable method of design and construction that creates a positive impact to the area in which it is built. And we will be one step closer to ending homelessness in Sacramento.
